At Holy Trinity we are fortunate enough to have a brilliant Gardening Club who do an enormous amount around the school grounds to help make it look as brilliant as it does. A big thank you goes to the parents who volunteer each week to lead the club and the children whose enthusiasm drives along everything that gets done. The piece below has been contributed by Mrs Greengrass who organises Gardening Club:
Earlier this year we entered a competition run by the Rural Community Council of Essex to design a healthy interesting lunch which could replace curled up sandwiches! We entered two designs, “Lunch Wrapped Up” by Harry and “Lettuce Leaf Fruit Salad” by Jessica. Our entries won the school a growing frame! From those designs the children have worked hard planting the seeds, weeding and watering in all weathers. The children have enjoyed broad beans and peas straight from the pods followed by the freshest strawberries ever! With the whole school theme of “Food Glorious Food” hopefully Gardening Club has provided the children a really good extension to their classroom learning.
We also entered the Halstead in Bloom Competition for the Portable Container Garden with a theme of “Incredible Edibles!” and also the “Young Persons Project” category. We didn’t win the Portable Container this year but we’ve still got a chance with the “young persons project” and hope to get the results in September when the town get the results.
The children come every week (even when we had snow still on the ground!) and are a committed group, so to round off a year of hard work and dedication we have today all enjoyed fresh vegetables from the garden with a little help from a local supplier too!
The Gazette have asked for photos and a piece about what we’ve been up to aswel so get your Halstead Gazette on Friday! (Today…)
Here are some photos from Gardening Club, including some of their end-of-year feast. Special mention goes to Megan Hood for her fantastic food photos!
