Helping your child with phonics – an Introduction to Letters and Sounds.

Dear Parents and Carers,

Phonics is a method for teaching reading and writing by developing awareness of sounds, teaching children to be able to hear and identify different sounds within words. It teaches the links between these sounds and the way in which they are written. The aim of phonics is to read new words by sounding them out and blending the sounds together.

Your child will have started learning phonics in Playschool or Nursery, and will build on this knowledge when they start school. They will have separate phonics sessions daily in Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1, lasting up to 25 minutes. We feel this learning is vital in helping children’s reading and writing.

This guide to Letters and Sounds goes through each Phase and explains to you, as a Parent/ Carer what you can do to help your child. This document is aimed to be a guide and support for you as we are aware that phonics teaching has significantly changed since many of us were at school.

We do not expect you to work on this for long periods, but it would be helpful if you could spend 5 minutes here and there on activities and games that would help your child on the phase that they are learning. Your Child’s Teacher will be able to explain what phase to focus on.

If you wish to clarify any points in the document, please speak to your child’s Teacher or myself and we will be happy to help.
